Better for people. Better for the planet.
Sustainability isn't a department at Commonware. It's the lens through which we make every decision, from the cotton we source to the boxes we ship in.

Our Materials
Organic Cotton
Over 70% of our products are made with GOTS-certified organic cotton, grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Organic cotton uses 91% less water and 62% less energy than conventional cotton. We source primarily from cooperatives in India and Turkey that support smallholder farmers with fair pricing and technical assistance.
Recycled Polyester
Where we use polyester, it's made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. Each jacket contains the equivalent of approximately 12 recycled bottles. Our recycled polyester is GRS-certified and produces 75% fewer carbon emissions than virgin polyester. We're working toward eliminating virgin synthetic fibers entirely by 2027.
Tencel Lyocell
Many of our softer fabrics use Tencel lyocell, made from sustainably harvested wood pulp in a closed-loop process that recovers 99% of the solvent used. It's biodegradable, breathable, and exceptionally gentle on skin. We use Tencel in our t-shirts, dresses, and loungewear.
Responsible Linen
Our linen is sourced from European flax, which requires no irrigation and minimal pesticides. Flax plants are naturally resilient and actually improve soil quality. We use European Flax-certified linen in our warm-weather collections, ensuring full traceability from field to fabric.
Our Factories
We work with 6 factory partners in 4 countries. Every factory is audited annually for compliance with our code of conduct, which exceeds the requirements of SA8000 and the Fair Labor Association.
Fair Wages
All factory workers earn at least a living wage for their region, not just the legal minimum. We publish our factory wage data annually in our impact report.
Safe Conditions
Factories are inspected for structural safety, fire safety, ventilation, and equipment maintenance. Workers have access to clean water, restrooms, and break areas.
Worker Empowerment
We support freedom of association and collective bargaining. Workers at all partner factories have access to anonymous grievance mechanisms and health programs.
Packaging
Every package you receive from Commonware is designed to be recycled or composted. Our shipping boxes are made from 100% recycled cardboard. The tissue paper inside is FSC-certified and printed with soy-based ink. Poly bags have been replaced with compostable plant-based bags made from corn starch.
We eliminated all single-use plastic from our packaging in 2023. Our packing tape is paper-based and recyclable. Return labels are printed on recycled paper. Even our hang tags are made from seed paper that you can plant.
Carbon Reduction Goals
We measure our carbon footprint across our entire supply chain, from raw materials to last-mile delivery. Here's where we are and where we're headed.
Achieved
40% reduction
In per-unit carbon emissions since 2021 baseline, achieved through material sourcing changes and shipping optimization.
2027 Target
65% reduction
Through renewable energy at factory partners, nearshoring production, and eliminating air freight from our supply chain.
2030 Target
Net zero
Across our full value chain, with a focus on actual emission reductions over offsets. Verified by Science Based Targets initiative.
